Sagansky (Harry “Doc”) is born in Boston.
1897
The son of Lithuanian immigrants, Doc Sagansky grows up in the West End, graduates from English High School and Tufts Dental School, but is forced to give up his dental practice due to chronic back pain. He opens a betting parlor in City Square across from Police Station 15 in 1930, and goes on to become Boston’s biggest bookmaker. Sagansky moves to Brookline and continues his involvement in gambling, while becoming a philanthropist, making donations to Boston hospitals. He dies on January 23, 1997 (28). A former West End neighbor subsequently tells the Boston Herald, “I don’t know where he went, but wherever it is, he’s making book.”
